East Antarctic ice core sulfur isotope measurements over a complete glacial-interglacial cycle

چکیده
[1] Both sulfur and oxygen isotopes of sulfate preserved in ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica have provided information on the relative sources of sulfate in the ice and their chemical transformation pathways in the atmosphere over various time periods. The mass-independent fractionation in the oxygen isotopes of sulfate from the Vostok ice core from east Antarctica suggests that gas-phase oxidation by the hydroxyl radical (OH) was relatively greater than aqueous-phase oxidation by O3 and H2O2 during the last glacial period than during the Eemian and preindustrial Holocene. The complete sulfur isotopic composition (dS, dS, dS) from the same Vostok ice core samples along with dS measurements from the Dome C, east Antarctic ice core from this study lend support to these conclusions and reveal significant isotopic fractionation of dS during chemical transformation and transport to east Antarctica. These findings reveal that conservation of sulfur isotopic signatures upon transport cannot be assumed for the East Antarctic plateau over the time periods considered.

Halogen species record Antarctic sea ice extent over glacial – interglacial periods
Sea ice is an integral part of the earth’s climate system because it affects planetary albedo, sea-surface salinity, and the atmosphere–ocean exchange of reactive gases and aerosols. Bromine and iodine chemistry is active at polar sea ice margins with the occurrence of bromine explosions and the biological production of organoiodine from sea ice algae. Satellite measurements demonstrate that co...
متن کامل30,000 years of cosmic dust in Antarctic ice.
Polar ice provides an archive for the influx of cosmic dust. Here, we present a high-resolution, glacial-to-interglacial record of cosmic dust using helium isotope analysis of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) ice core drilled in Dronning Maud Land. We obtained a relatively constant 3He flux over the past 30,000 years. This finding excludes 3He as a pacemaker of late Ple...
متن کاملInterpreting last glacial to Holocene dust changes at Talos Dome (East Antarctica): implications for atmospheric variations from regional to hemispheric scales
Central East Antarctic ice cores preserve stratigraphic records of mineral dust originating from remote sources in the Southern Hemisphere, and represent useful indicators of climatic variations on glacial-interglacial time scales. The peripheries of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet, where ice-free areas with the potential to emit dust exist, have been less explored from this point of view. Here, w...
متن کاملEight glacial cycles from an Antarctic ice core
The Antarctic Vostok ice core provided compelling evidence of the nature of climate, and of climate feedbacks, over the past 420,000 years. Marine records suggest that the amplitude of climate variability was smaller before that time, but such records are often poorly resolved. Moreover, it is not possible to infer the abundance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from marine records. Here we...

[1] A record of antimony (Sb) and thallium (Tl) from the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) Dome CAntarctic ice core provides the characteristics of climate-related natural changes in concentrations and fluxes of these toxic elements over the time period back to Marine Isotope Stage 20.2, ~800 kyr B.P. A strong variability in concentrations and fluxes are observed for both el...
